1.2. Sections

Piano, Violin, Cello.

1.3. Eligibility

Due to the postponement of the Competition, young musicians whose age exceeds the originally established limits (musicians born after October 1, 2003) are allowed to participate in the Competition. Musicians older than 17 by the beginning of the Competition (October 22, 2022) will be allowed to participate in the Competition on a general basis. More information about the conditions for the distribution of prizes is in the item 2.2.6 of the Rules.

1.4. Organizers

1.4.1. The Competition is held by the Association of Tchaikovsky Competition Stars (hereinafter – “Association”), the Directorate of the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians (hereinafter – “Directorate”) with support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, the St. Petersburg State Rimsky–Korsakov Conservatory, Russian Gnesins Academy of Music.

1.4.2. Association and Directorate have exclusive rights to organize and hold the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians worldwide.

2. Competition Procedure

2.1. Jury Regulations

2.1.1. The Competition will be evaluated by a competent international Jury panel via secret ballot.

2.1.2. The Jury decisions are final on every stage of the competition and are not a subject for any questioning, review or appeal.

2.1.3. Work carried out by the Jury panel is regulated by rules developed by the Association.

2.1.4. During the First and Second rounds of the Competition from October 22 to November 1, 2022, the Jury will evaluate the recorded performances online. The voting results will be published on the Competition website on October 27 (First round) and November 2 (Second round).

2.2. Auditions order.

2.2.1. Participants’ performances will be placed in the “Performances of the Participants” section on the official competition website www.tchaikovksy-competition.net.

2.2.2. Participants of the First and Second rounds of violin and cello sections perform with piano accompaniment and must ensure the work of the accompanist on their own. Third (Final) round participants perform with a symphony orchestra, provided by the competition Directorate.

2.2.3. Total length of performance time shall not exceed 25 minutes in the First round, 30 minutes in the Second round.

2.2.4. No more than 60 applicants in each section are admitted for the First round. No more than 50% of the participants in the First round will be admitted to the Second round. Jury may recommend more participants for the Second round, but the Organizing Committee holds the right for the final decision. Six contestants from each section will be admitted to the Third (Final) round, but this number might be increased in accordance with the Jurys’ opinion and decision of the Directorate.

2.2.5. If, by the decision of the Jury, musicians whose age exceeds 17 years will enter the Final round of the Competition, the Organizing Committee will expand the number of participants in the Final round by an equal number of participants under 17 who have received the most votes of the Jury.
2.2.6. If musicians over the age of 17 become laureates of the Competition according to the results of the Final round auditions, their prize places will be shared with musicians whose age does not exceed 17 years.

2.2.7. The Third round of the Competition and the Award Ceremony are scheduled for December, 2022 in the format of offline auditions. The final dates and venue will be announced additionally. The list of the finalists will be announced after the Jury’s final vote on the official website www.tchaikovsky-competition.net on November 2, 2022.

2.3. Rehearsals

Administration of the competition will provide a maximum of 60-minute orchestral rehearsal for the finalists. The rehearsal schedule shall be set by the Administration.

2.4. Travel and Accommodation of the Finalists

2.4.1. Directorate provides participants of the Final round of the Competition with free of charge accommodation in certain hotels for the duration of participation in the Final Round. The cost of accommodation for accompanying persons and guests of the Competition will be announced additionally.

2.4.2. Participants of the Final round of the violin and cello sections independently issue a permit for the import and export of their instruments through the customs services, declare and pay for their transportation across the border, if necessary.

2.4.3. Directorate will provide participants of the Final round with additional information about travel routes, meals and other information after determination if the exact dated and venue of the final round.

2.4.4. Finalists should be ready to issue and purchase an air ticket (if required) on their own and at their own expense. The Directorate will seek to partially compensate the finalists for the cost of air tickets, which will be announced additionally.

2.4.5. Finalists should be ready to apply for a visa to participate in the third round auditions (if necessary) and purchase insurance on their own and at their own expense. If necessary, the Directorate can assist in obtaining a visa.

3. Video Submission Procedure

3.1. Video Submission Dates

Participants of the Competition must provide the Organizing Committee the original video recordings of the performance of the declared program of the First and Second rounds of the Competition no later than September 26, 2022.

3.2. Video Submission Process

Participants of the Competition must provide the Organizing Committee of the Competition with video recordings of the performance of the First and Second rounds program:

• Upload video files to any file storage (for example, Yandex.Disk, Cloud Mail.ru or Google Drive);

• Send a letter (subject of the letter: “video recordings + first name, last name”) with links to video files by email to the Directorate video@atcs.pro no later than 00:00 on September 26, 2022 Beijing time (GMT +8);

• Participants must independently verify the correctness of downloading and displaying videos, as well as the availability of files for downloading from the provided links.

3.3. Reimbursenent of Video Recording Expences

Participants will be reimbursed the costs of producing video recordings of the performances of the First and Second rounds of the Competition in an amount not exceeding $ 150 USD. Bank details for payment of compensation, as well as documents confirming payment, must be attached to an email with video files.

3.4. Video Requirements

3.4.1. Each participant must provide links to download the original video files in accordance with item 3.2. of the Competition Rules;

3.4.2. Video files should be named as follows: “video of the first round + section + full name of the participant + cam 1/2/3”, “video of the second round + section + full name of the participant + cam 1/2/3”;

3.4.3. The performance must comply with the order stated by the participant while filling out the Application.

3.4.4. The video should contain no extraneous logos, banners, signatures, titles, advertising or other non-relevant audio-visual information in the frame.

3.4.5. The video recording must be made specifically for Competition no earlier than July 1, 2022.

3.4.6. To ensure an objective assessment, the video recordings must be of high quality:
• Clean and bright background; no strong light sources; front light;
• The picture is clear and with no interferences;
• All recording equipment must be of the same model, shooting parameters must be the same;
• Picture and audio must be synchronized without additional post-processing of sound or image;
• Cuts and montage in the intervals between the performed pieces is not allowed.
• Video for each round should be recorded in one take.
• If performance is recorded by multiple cameras (optional), video from each camera should be uploaded in a separate file.

3.4.7. Quality requirements:
• Resolution: 4096*2160 (16:9) or 1920*1080;
• Frame rate: 30 FPS.
• Format: original files/MP4

4. Prizes & Awards

4.1.1. The First Prize must be awarded. All prizes, including cash prizes, may be divided in accordance with the decision of the Jury and the Directorate.

4.1.2. The participants of the Third (Final) round will be awarded with the following prizes:

I Prize: Cash prize, Gold Medal, Diploma and title of Laureate, special trophy
II Prize: Cash prize, Silver Medal, Diploma and title of Laureate, special trophy
III Prize: Cash prize, Bronze Medal, Diploma and title of Laureate, special trophy
IV Prize: Cash prize, Diploma and title of Laureate, special trophy
V Prize: Cash prize, Diploma and title of Laureate, special trophy
VI Prize: Cash prize, Diploma and title of Laureate, special trophy

4.1.3. Jury, Directorate and Partners of the Competition may designate other special prizes for the contestants, teachers and piano accompanists.

4.1.4. The Administration may organize a concert tour for the competition laureates after the competition. Laureates shall be obliged to perform in such tour.

4.1.5. Competition winners will be granted special recommendation in case they express willingness to participate in the International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow, Russia).

5. Other Rules and General Information

5.1. Other Regulations

5.1.1. In all disputes and matters that may occur during the Competition decisions of the Directorate shall be final.

5.1.2. If a contestant violates the Competition rules, the Directorate and the Jury Panel will reserve the right to expel the contestant from the Competition.

5.1.3. During the competition, contestants must abstain from performing on stage or making any declaration to the mass media excluding those permitted by the organizers of the competition.

5.1.4. Laureates of the Competition must attend the Closing Ceremony and perform at the gala concert organized by the Directorate.

5.1.5. Directorate shall reserve exclusive worldwide rights to broadcast, publish, copy and promote audio and video recordings as well as distribution and publishing rights for all the rounds of the Competition and its related events, including the Opening, Awards and Closing Ceremonies, master-classes and the performances with symphony orchestras. The Directorate shall reserve the exclusive right to use recorded audio and video materials free of charge and without obtaining the permission of contestants, accompanists, conductors or symphony orchestras and Jury members, including those who took part in master-classes during the competition.

5.1.6. The Directorate shall reserve exclusive rights for all types of performances of the Laureates for the period of 36 months following the competition. All participants shall sign an agreement with the Association with respect to this matter prior the Third round.

5.1.7. The Directorate reserves the right to transfer all and any rights stated in items 5.1.5 and 5.1.6. of the Rules to any third party.

5.1.8. The official languages of the competition are Russian, Chinese and English. In case of misunderstanding, Russian shall be considered as the base language. In case that anyone wishes to translate officially the “Rules and Regulations” or any other published materials by the Association or the Organizing Committee, they must notify and obtain consent of the Directorate. If such approval has not been given, the Directorate shall not take responsibility for any issues arising from or caused by the misinterpretation of the translated materials.

5.1.9. Participation in the Competition of young musicians, accompanists, orchestras, conductors, as well as members of the jury means full agreement with all the rules conditions of the competition. In case of violation of the terms of the competition, the Directorate reserves the right to deprive the participant of the final of a cash prize, the title of laureate and/or diploma of the Competition.

5.1.10. Each contestant must perform the entire repertoire by heart without using scores.

5.1.11. Participants of the competition independently decide on the performance of repeating sections of the competition repertoire, provided that the total duration of the performance does not exceed the permissible (see Item 6 of the Rules).

5.1.12. Determination of the legal status of authorship of works by composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as the settlement of possible disputes arising as a result of their public performance, is the responsibility of participants in the competition. The organizers of the competition are not responsible for the public performances by the participants of the competition.

5.1.13. Only officially published compositions may be performed at the Competition. Alternative editions are admitted only in case they are printed in the official editions. In that case, the contestant must submit the sources.

5.1.14. Compositions performed in the final round of the competition with an orchestra must be performed in their original version.

5.1.15. Compositions written by contestants are not allowed for performance.

6. Performance Repertoire

6.1. Piano

Round 1:
Total 5 pieces (25 min max)
• J.S. Bach – Preludes and Fugues from WTC or two three-part Inventions;
• One piece of the contestant’s choice from P. Tchaikovsky;
• One sonata by J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart or L. Beethoven (one movement at the contestant’s choice);
• Two concert etudes.

Round 2:
Total 3 pieces (30 min max)
• P.Tchaikovsky – One or more pieces (not from the First round program, total time 15 min max);
• Romantic piece;
• One piece by the 20th or 21st century composer.

Round 3:
Concerto for piano and orchestra (at the contestant’s choice).

6.2. Violin

Round 1:
Total 3 pieces (25 min max)
• J.S. Bach – Two movements (one in the fast and the other in slow tempo) from the following:
– Partita in E major, BWV 1006 movements 1, 2, 3;
– Partita in d minor, BWV 1004 movements 1, 2, 3, 4;
– Sonata in a minor, BWV 1003 movements 3, 4;
– Sonata in C major, BWV 1005 movements 3, 4;
– Sonata in g minor, BWV 1001, movements 1, 2 or 3, 4;
• One of the Caprices by N. Paganini (24 Caprices) or by H.Wieniawski (Op. 10)
• P. Tchaikovsky – One of the following pieces:
– Serenade Milancholique, Op.26;
– Scherzo, Op.42 No.2;
– Meditation, Op.42 No. 1;
– Valse-Scherzo, Op.34;

Round 2:
Total 4 pieces (30 min max):
• W. A. Mozart – One of the Sonatas (K 301, K302, K 303, K 304, K305);
• One piece by a 20th or 21st Century composer;
• One virtuoso piece (20 minutes maximum);
• P.Tchaikovsky – Melodie, Op.42 No.3;

Round 3:
Concerto for violin and orchestra (at the contestant’s choice).

6.3. Cello

Round 1:
Total 3 pieces (25 min max)
• One of the following etudes:
– F. Grutzmacher in C Major, Op.38 No. 1, / in E major, Op.38 No.9;
– D. Popper in F major, Op.73 No.6 / in E flat major Op.73 No.9 / in C major, Op.73 No. 17;
– A. Noeick in A major Op.32 No. 7;
– A. Franchomme in b minor Op.7 No.9;
• One cantilena piece (not a sonata movement);
• One virtuoso piece (not a sonata movement).

Round 2:
Total 3 pieces (30 min max)
• J.S. Bach – Prelude and Sarabande from any of the 6 Suites for cello-solo.
• One sonata of the following:
– A. Ariosti in e minor
– G. Sammartini in G Major
– F. Francoeur in E Major
– G. Valentini in E Major
– J. B. Breval in G Major
– L. Boccherini – any of the 6 sonatas
• P. Tchaikovsky – “Nocturne” or a piece by the 20th or 21st Century composer (at the contestant’s choice).

Round 3:
• Concerto for cello and orchestra (at the contestant’s choice).
